On Friday February 9, 2018, 49 Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) members from 10 different chapters came together at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) for the 3rd Annual North Carolina Chapters of CSI Advocacy Summit. Dr. Holly Hartwig Moorhead, CSI International’s Chief Executive Officer offered welcoming remarks, followed by the Associate Dean of the UNCP School of Education, Dr. Angela McDonald. Dr. Hartwig Moorhead was then joined by CSI International’s Chief Operating Officer, Dr. Stephen Kennedy, for a presentation regarding CSI’s historical roots in advocacy. Next, Dr. Shenika Jones, UNCP Assistant Professor and President of the North Carolina Counseling Association, delivered a presentation on culturally-competent advocacy, followed by a buffet luncheon sponsored by the UNCP Graduate Student Association and the UNCP School of Education. After lunch, Dr. Gerard Lawson, President of the American Counseling Association, delivered an overview of advocacy for clients and the profession, and the day came to a finale with action groups for addictions counselors, clinical mental health counselors, college counselors, and school counselors. Attendees have pledged to engage in counseling-related advocacy projects across the next year, and the 4th Annual North Carolina Chapters of CSI Advocacy Summit will be held next spring at East Carolina University.
